For centuries women around the world have competed against the patriarchal structure that continues to exist today. In the United States, social and political actualities have inspired women to stand in solidarity with one another and collectively denounce sexist ideologies. At this pivotal moment of my existence, I have found meaningful ways in which I can contribute to women’s empowerment.
My work is inspired by the perspective of French author Marguerite Duras who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel, L’Amant. The sexually explicit content and feminist literary style urged me to take provocative risks and be publicly vulnerable. Duras’ writing inspired me to begin exposing my own body in my work. I do this with the intention of proving vulnerability can lead to confidence and empowerment in the context of female sexuality and liberation. This body of work reflects Duras’ sentiments, which I share—women should be able to enjoy the same degree of sexual freedom that men do. My decisions are meant to provoke other women to think critically about our collective power and potential to facilitate necessary social and political change.

Binding Queue is a collaborative piece in which fifteen women participated. In a room full of women, each participant stood, almost completely nude, while I smoothed plaster across their bare chests. As a result of each individual experiencing complete vulnerability among their peers, many powerful emotional connections were forged. This intimate and physical process unified the participants with confidence and prospect, proving my belief that vulnerability can lead to empowerment. Binding Queue was created on the same day as the Women’s March on Washington, acting as an abstract variant of protest. This piece, and all the women who participated in it, stand in solidarity with those who fight for equality.
